Frigate building materials
I am about to try and build a 1/96 scale RN frigate based on a sirmar grp hull,I would be most grateful if any of your members could advise me of the best material and glues to use for the bulkheads, decks and superstructure,as i have not built to this size before.
Yours sincererly.

Hello Mike

Well it looks like you have picked what they call a semi kit to build i.e. you purchase the hull & plans then the fitting kits as and when they are required, Leaving you to decide what materials to use to build the boat, you can use wood ply or plastic card {styrene sheet] better still you can even use both, basically it all comes down to what material suits you when working with it,Being as it is a RN Frigate and made of steel personally I would go for plastic card because when you come down to the painting you will not have to get rid of the grain in the wood. You can buy sheets of plasticcard at hobby stores but probably best to get stocked up at shows as rightly you say it is mostly the internet we have to rely upon.

So as a guide you would need 2mm for the decks 1.5mm for bulk heads and a mixture of 1mm - 0.8mm for the superstructure then it is just a case of transferring the shapes and size from the plan to the card via the best method that suits you i.e. tracing paper can help greatly then all you need to do for cutting the card is to use a straight edge ruler and a Sharpe Stanley knife, score the card a couple of times and then just snap the part required off and you end up with a nice clean edge.

Try practicing a few times and you will soon get the hang of it!! Then  standard revell glue to melt the styrene joints together [just like the airfix kits] It would help you greatly if you could attend our show this June you will be able to obtain  most materials you will need to build the frigate and meet a lot of people interested in the hobby who will be more than willing to help you. I hope I have given you a basic start to this addictive hobby, and if you need any more advice as I am sure you will, please do not hesitate to ask also if you attend the show please introduce yourself and I can explain in a lot more detail.

Regards

Having never used a servo for the speed controller myself, you will need to find out more about removing the unit [basicaly remove the unit completly].As for fitting a speed controller that should be a quite easy task for you.
First you need to decide what size controller to go for[which to keep things simple depends on the size of your boat, and the amperage of batterys you have installed] 15 to 40amp is the scale. For your perkasa i would think a 15-20amp controller should be adequate.
Mtroniks and electronize are quality products.The controller you decide upon will have all the wiring instructions included in the box,basically the wiring on the unit comes as follows;
Red/Black joined with a tamiya connector which goes to the motor.
Yellow lead = positive battery terminal
Blue lead = negitive battery terminal
Twin black lead connected to on/off switch
triple coloured lead connects to the reciever
And thats about it, may i also suggest you go to model boat mayhem and click on technical bits as there is quite a bit of information on these pages, which you should find usefull for the future.

Good luck, Steven Richie [CADMA]

Fellow Model Boat Fan:

I am a model boat builder and have been asked by an old navy buddy to build him a model of an Marlow Explorer 35c Cabin Cruiser. I contacted the manufacturer but they refused to provide plans. I was wondering if you might know where i could obtain plans for the boat.

Best regards

Hello Joe,
I suspect by reading your mail that you have done your homework, and having made a search for myself i can see there is no kit available that you could modify.
I am afraid that the only answer that i can come up with is to give Dave Milbourn a call [who is best known for his design and drawing work for Model Slipway]
You can contact him at 19 Carisbrooke Drive, Nottingham NG3 5DS.
Telephone: 0115 9607951 Mornings only I'm informed. He has just taken over a company called Action kits @ www.actionkit.co.uk
He is the man to start asking

Good luck with your project,
